Microsoft Edge Blocks Old Ad Blockers Like uBlock Origin

Edge Drops uBlock Origin as MV3 Rules Take Over

Microsoft is shutting down Manifest V2 support in Edge, disabling uBlock Origin and other legacy ad blockers. Anyone running privacy tools, or crypto wallet extensions, in Edge should check compatibility now, before the browser quietly turns their extensions off.

What actually happened

Microsoft says only 58 extensions on the Edge Add-On Store still see meaningful use under Manifest V2. Just three of those have no Manifest V3 replacement, according to Microsoft Edge Blocks Old Ad Blockers Like uBlock Origin, which cites reporting from 7 August 2026. Microsoft stated: 'Over the next few months, MV2 extensions will be gradually turned off by default. Users will be notified in advance and directed to recommended MV3 versions where available.' The rollout begins in Edge's Canary, Dev, and Beta channels, then moves to Stable. Microsoft targets the end of 2026 for the consumer switch. Enterprise deprecation follows in early 2027, with managed devices untouched during the consumer phase.

How we got here

Google Chrome made the same move earlier in 2026, retiring Manifest V2 and pushing developers toward Manifest V3, which restricts the network filtering APIs full ad blockers need. Edge runs on Chromium, so it inherits Google's roadmap. A lighter tool, uBlock Origin Lite, already exists for MV3, but with less filtering power. Opera says it will keep MV2 alive 'for as long as it's technically reasonable.' Firefox, built on its own engine, still supports classic ad blockers in full.

Why this matters for you

For Edge users, ad and tracker blocking may weaken once MV2 disappears. uBlock Origin Lite keeps basic filtering but drops fine grained rule control. Anyone wanting deep ad and tracker blocking may need Firefox or Opera instead. For builders, this matters more directly. Crypto wallet extensions, phishing filters, and Web3 security tools that rely on deep network level access now face the same Manifest V3 ceiling as ad blockers. Chromium browsers are converging on one set of extension permissions, narrowing what any browser based tool, including wallet software, can technically do.

The bigger question

If every major Chromium browser adopts the same extension rules, how much real choice does any user actually keep? Wallet extensions, phishing filters, and privacy tools all rely on the same network level permissions ad blockers use. When platform owners decide what an extension can technically do, what happens to browser based security and privacy tools that crypto users depend on every day?

What to watch

Edge's MV2 phase out starts this month in Canary, Dev, and Beta channels, spreading to Stable through the rest of 2026. Microsoft aims to finish the consumer rollout by year end. Enterprise support continues until early 2027. Watch for in browser prompts pointing to Manifest V3 replacements, and check whether your wallet or ad blocking extensions still function before Edge switches them off.
