Framework Laptop 13 BIOS Update Bricks Some Devices
A routine BIOS update froze some Framework Laptop 13 machines mid-flash, leaving them unable to boot. It matters because this was a standard software patch, not a risky experimental release, and it hit a laptop built around the promise of easy repair.
What actually happened
The update, BIOS 3.20 for Laptop 13 models with AMD Ryzen 7040 chips, went out in July 2026 and was still posted on Framework's site as of 20 August 2026, The Verge reported. Owners on both Windows and Linux described their machines stuck on the update screen afterward. Framework founder Nirav Patel told The Verge the company has "received reports of a small percentage" of these updates producing non-bootable boards and is "investigating the root cause." Patel said Framework will replace affected mainboards under warranty, and will also make exceptions for confirmed out-of-warranty cases. A Framework spokesperson, Jim Redner, said the failures affect only a small share of total updates.

Framework built its name on laptops you can open up and fix yourself, swapping parts instead of buying a new machine. The 7040-series Ryzen version of the Laptop 13 is one of its best-selling configurations. Firmware updates like this one normally fix bugs or close security gaps, but a failed flash can leave a board dead on arrival. Some owners have already used external BIOS flashing tools to bring their laptops back to life without waiting on Framework. Until now, Framework had not dealt with a bricking problem tied to a normal, fully released BIOS update.
