QuFi Launches Post-Quantum Bitcoin Verification on Testnet

QuFi Tests Quantum-Proof Bitcoin Verification on Testnet

QuFi Network tested a new way to check Bitcoin transactions against future quantum computer attacks, launching a testnet proof called uBTC on 4 September 2026. Wallet users should care because Bitcoin's signatures carry no built-in quantum protection yet, and this test previews one possible fix.

What actually happened

QuFi Network, a post-quantum infrastructure firm, launched the platform on 4 September 2026, according to Cointelegraph. The uBTC proof-of-concept checks BTC collateral separately from settlement, generating cryptographic proofs before funds move, while redemptions still finish as ordinary Bitcoin transactions. Verification runs through independent nodes using three post-quantum standards: ML-DSA-65, SLH-DSA and ML-KEM-1024, avoiding heavier signatures directly on the blockchain. Bitcoin's price barely moved on the news. BTC traded at $79,626, down 1.59% in 24 hours, ranging between $78,706 and $81,379, with $28.77 billion (USD) in 24-hour volume and a $1.60 trillion (USD) market value.

How we got here

Quantum-defense testing has accelerated through 2026. In August, StarkWare completed a quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction on mainnet without a fork, though it took hours and cost roughly $150 to $200. That month, banks and regulators across Europe, the Middle East and Asia trialed post-quantum wallets using ML-DSA-65, a standard QuFi also adopted. Blockstream researchers proposed SHRINCS, an early post-quantum signature scheme for Bitcoin still without a finished security proof. Bitcoin's core protocol carries no quantum defenses yet, leaving each project to test a different path toward one.

Why this matters for you

For everyday wallet holders, nothing changes today. uBTC runs only on Bitcoin Testnet4, not mainnet, and does not touch how bonuz or any wallet handles real BTC. Builders now have a working example of adding post-quantum checks without rewriting Bitcoin's base rules. Miners and node operators should expect that any future standard, external like QuFi's or built-in like SHRINCS, will need a coordinated network upgrade. Wallet users gain nothing immediately, but whichever standard wins developer support will eventually shape how their coins get protected.

The bigger question

Should quantum resistance live inside Bitcoin's protocol, through proposals like SHRINCS, or in outside verification layers like QuFi's uBTC? Protocol changes need agreement from miners, developers and node operators, a slow process. Outside layers launch faster but ask users to trust an extra system. The answer decides how much of Bitcoin's future security sits on the base chain, versus infrastructure most wallet users never see.

What to watch

QuFi has not set a mainnet date for uBTC beyond its Testnet4 trial. SHRINCS remains an early proposal awaiting a completed security proof, so further debate is likely. The US Senate holds a procedural vote on the CLARITY Act on 15 September 2026, a related marker for Bitcoin's regulatory path. bonuz.market will track whichever quantum-defense method gains developer traction.
