Banco Santander Reveals $4.3M Bitcoin Position via BlackRock's IBIT
Banco Santander, Spain's largest bank, has revealed a $4.3 million investment in Bitcoin, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
The Madrid-based bank bought its exposure through BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), holding a total of 129,615 shares. The filing makes Santander the latest traditional financial institution to seek exposure to the largest cryptocurrency by market cap, without holding Bitcoin directly.
The move isn't Santander's first step into crypto. Over the past year, its digital bank Openbank has let customers buy Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, taking a friendlier approach to marketing digital assets.
IBIT lets investors gain Bitcoin exposure through ordinary brokerage accounts, without dealing with storage or private keys. It's the most successful crypto ETF on the market, holding $46.9 billion in assets under management. Since the SEC approved a wave of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024, institutions that were previously put off by self-custody have had an easier route in.
U.S. Bitcoin ETFs now manage more than $83 billion in assets combined, according to CoinGlass data, with competing products from BlackRock, Fidelity and Morgan Stanley all in the market.
bonuz has been watching this shift closely: as more traditional banks quietly build Bitcoin exposure through ETFs, the case for self-custodial, multi-chain wallets that skip the ETF middleman keeps getting stronger.
