A tiny startup just crowdfunded AR glasses built on a silicon carbide lens, a material once reserved for lab prototypes. What actually happened
Nimbo X1 opened its Kickstarter campaign on 28 August 2026, powered by a silicon carbide, or SiC, waveguide from SEEV, according to Silicon Carbide Waveguides Pros and Cons. Meta first demoed a SiC waveguide publicly in September 2024, inside its Orion prototype, reaching a 70-degree field of view. SiC bends light with a refractive index near 2.6, versus 1.7 to 2.0 for standard waveguide glass, allowing wider views in thinner lenses. On 29 October 2025, SEEV co-founder Dr Shi Rui presented on mass-producing SiC diffractive waveguide chips at the SEMI Core-Display Conference, the report notes.
How we got here
Glass waveguides already ship in AR glasses today, but they scatter colour unevenly, a flaw engineers call a rainbow artifact that flares when a wearer tilts their head. Chinese manufacturers, including SEEV, Moldnano, LLVision and Goeroptics, reportedly worked on SiC waveguides before Meta's 2024 demo. Magic Leap and Coherent are separately developing SiC substrates and waveguides in the United States, per the same report.
