SpaceX, Tesla Weigh Merger Over 30,000 Bitcoin Stash
Elon Musk confirmed on Tuesday that SpaceX and Tesla are weighing a merger that would fold more than 30,000 bitcoin into one treasury. For everyday wallet holders, it is a fresh sign that corporate bitcoin stacks now rank among the biggest whales in the market.
What actually happened
Speaking on SpaceX's third-quarter earnings call, Musk said special committees at both firms are reviewing the idea, with no terms agreed yet. SpaceX holds 18,712 BTC and Tesla holds 11,509 BTC, a combined 30,221 BTC. Musk controls about 36% of SpaceX voting power, 48.4% including options, and 19.8% of Tesla. "Do I think it would be a good idea, yes. But at the end of the day, the shareholders have to be supportive of this," Musk said, per CoinDesk. SpaceX shares climbed about 9% to $161 (USD) in premarket trading after beating revenue forecasts. Bitcoin traded near $83,209, up 2.12% in 24 hours, between $81,196 and $83,609, on $452.0 million (USD) in volume.
How we got here
Bitcoin had fallen as much as 52% from its roughly $126,000 (USD) peak before this year's rebound. That slide pushed managers toward safety nets: Calamos launched protected bitcoin ETFs in early 2025, and BlackRock just filed for its own iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF, per The Block. JPMorgan Asset Management issued its first 10-year bitcoin forecast, projecting 10% annual returns alongside 55% volatility. Switzerland's FINMA cleared the country's first retail spot bitcoin ETF this week. Tuesday's rally tracks a broader tech-stock bounce tied to SpaceX earnings, not the merger talk.
Why this matters for you
If the merger closes, one boardroom would control 30,221 BTC, enough to move markets on its own. For wallet users on platforms like bonuz, that means price swings can now trace back to corporate decisions, not just retail demand. BlackRock's and Calamos' protected ETFs offer cautious investors a buffer against crashes, trading upside for safety. FINMA's approval and JPMorgan's 10% forecast signal bitcoin inching toward mainstream portfolios, despite 55% volatility. None of this changes self-custody mechanics, but it changes who else holds coins beside you.
The bigger question
If two of one person's companies combine into a single 30,221 BTC treasury, should that concentration worry everyday holders the way a government stockpile would? Corporate bitcoin treasuries are growing fast, but oversight varies wildly. Where should the line sit between managing treasury risk and one person steering a market-moving stash?
What to watch
Tesla posts third-quarter earnings after Wednesday's close, with analysts expecting $28.13 billion (USD) in revenue. No date has been set for the merger committees to report findings. BlackRock's protected ETF and Switzerland's retail spot bitcoin ETF still need final regulatory clearance before trading starts. Expect updates on merger terms or a shareholder vote in coming weeks.
