Starknet Votes to Explore Post-Quantum L1 Exit
Starknet token holders voted to study quitting Ethereum and launching as an independent, quantum-resistant blockchain. If it happens, how wallets and apps plug into Starknet could eventually shift.
What actually happened
More than 93.5% of voting power backed the research proposal, according to Wu Blockchain. The vote only greenlights research into moving Starknet off Ethereum into a standalone Layer 1 built for post-quantum security. StarkWare, the company behind Starknet, will publish a draft whitepaper on the idea in November 2026. No cryptographic details are public yet. Nothing is approved beyond research. STRK holders must vote again before any real migration can start, and no deadline for that decision exists yet.
How we got here
Starknet currently works as a zero-knowledge rollup. It posts transaction proofs to Ethereum, borrowing Ethereum's security and data availability. That link also means Starknet's costs and speed partly depend on Ethereum's own network. Industry-wide worry about quantum computers breaking standard blockchain cryptography has been rising, and StarkWare has been signaling interest in hardening Starknet against that risk well before this vote happened.
Why this matters for you
For regular wallet users, nothing changes today. Transactions, fees, and app behavior on Starknet stay the same for now. If a future migration goes through, wallet infrastructure and bridges connecting to Starknet could need updates over time. For builders, settlement rules and existing tooling could shift down the road. For bonuz.market users tracking Starknet-based apps, this is a slow-moving story worth bookmarking, not an urgent one.
The bigger question
If Starknet splits off into its own Layer 1, does it keep any of the security and liquidity it currently borrows from Ethereum? That question matters beyond Starknet, for every Layer 2 weighing its own path.
What to watch
StarkWare's draft whitepaper is due in November 2026. A separate STRK holder vote will be needed before any migration starts, with no fixed date yet. Bonuz will track how any changes affect wallets and apps built on Starknet.
