Tokenized Stocks Face Pushback From Microsoft, Google

Tokenized Stocks Stall as 22 Major Companies Opt Out

Microsoft, Alphabet, Goldman Sachs, McDonald's and 18 other major companies have told a new OKX and ICE trading venue not to tokenize their shares. For anyone holding crypto wallets and hoping to trade blue-chip stocks onchain, this signals the rollout will move far slower than expected.

What actually happened

The objector count hit 22 this week. Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Goldman Sachs (GS) and McDonald's (MCD) filed objections on Monday. Wells Fargo (WFC), Cisco (CSCO) and others followed on Friday, according to CoinDesk. Under the SEC's innovation exemption, a venue must give an issuer 30 days notice before listing its tokenized shares. If a company says nothing, that silence counts as approval. Law firm Latham and Watkins warned that once the 30 days pass, there is no way back, an issuer cannot object later or undo its silence. 'Most of these companies had no idea a third party had tokenized their stock until the OKXICE notice went up,' Vertalo CEO Dave Hendricks told CoinDesk. Securitize and BitGo both said they will not object.

How we got here

The SEC opened this exemption about a month ago, the first formal route for trading tokenized U.S. equities, jointly built by OKX and ICE. Supporters expected household name stocks to move onto crypto rails quickly. Instead, the first real test brought hesitation. Nasdaq, long a tokenization booster, said it will object to tokenizing its own stock (NDAQ) under this exemption, warning that venues outside the National Market System could split liquidity and hurt price discovery. Nasdaq is building its own tokenization model inside the existing exchange system instead, CoinDesk reported.

Why this matters for you

For everyday wallet holders, this delays easy, round the clock access to shares of firms like Microsoft or McDonald's through a crypto wallet. Issuers are choosing caution until custody, dividends and voting rights onchain are clearer. TD Securities' Reid Noch noted that extra demand, particularly from overseas buyers, may not yet outweigh the risks of thin, 24/7 trading outside normal market hours. For platforms building wallet access to tokenized equities, including those in the bonuz ecosystem, this means fewer blue chip names to offer at launch, and a longer runway of investor education before adoption picks up.

The bigger question

If staying silent locks in a permanent, unchangeable decision while objecting costs nothing, will any major company ever choose tokenization on its own? Or does real growth only arrive once regulators flip the rule, making opt-in the default and giving issuers more time to settle custody, dividend and voting questions before shares move onchain?

What to watch

Watch for the public objector list to keep growing as OKX and ICE send more 30-day notices to issuers. Watch whether the next tokenized-securities venue faces the same resistance. Securitize says it is running webinars to walk issuers through custody and shareholder rights. Nasdaq's rival tokenization model, built inside existing exchange rules, is worth tracking too.
