Disney Plus Tests AI-Powered Search for Personalized Shows

Disney Plus Tests AI Search Tool For Subscribers

Disney is quietly testing an AI tool on Disney Plus that builds a personalized row of shows from a typed or spoken prompt. Watch this if you care about how voice and AI interfaces are replacing menus everywhere, not just on TV.

What actually happened

The feature is a "limited beta experiment" running with a "small group of select subscribers," Disney confirmed to The Verge. Users type, speak, or pick a prompt, and the AI returns a custom row of matching titles that "fits the moment." Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro told investors this week he wants Disney Plus to be the company's "digital centerpiece," built on "increased personalization, exclusivity, and benefits for subscribers." A second tool, ESPN Search, is in parallel beta with a "subset" of users, answering sports questions using stats pulled from ESPN's data ecosystem, per the company.

How we got here

Streaming apps have leaned on watch-history algorithms for over a decade. This test pushes Disney toward something closer to a conversation than a scroll. Netflix trialed OpenAI-based search last year and later shipped native voice search, The Verge reported. Warner Bros. Discovery announced its own conversational search for HBO Max just last week. Peacock already uses an AI voice clone of a Bravo host to narrate clips. Disney is late but not alone.

Why this matters for you

For subscribers, expect faster, more specific answers instead of endless browsing across Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, and Nat Geo libraries. For anyone building on top of AI interfaces, this is another signal that voice and natural language are becoming the default input layer, not a novelty. That shift matters beyond phones and TVs. The same prompt-based discovery pattern is exactly what future wearable and smart glasses interfaces will need to work well, since typing and scrolling do not translate to a face-worn screen. Competitors without conversational search may soon look outdated by default.

The bigger question

When AI decides what counts as a good recommendation, who is really steering that choice: the platform tuning for engagement, the advertiser buying placement, or the person who typed the request?

What to watch

No public launch date exists yet for either Disney Plus AI search or ESPN Search, both still limited to small beta groups. Disney's next earnings call is a likely spot for updates on subscriber and personalization metrics. Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Peacock are all shipping similar features in the same window, a pattern worth tracking as voice-first interfaces spread beyond streaming apps.
