Silicon Carbide Waveguides: The AR Glasses Tradeoff
A new technical review compares silicon carbide waveguides with glass, the optical tech behind Meta's Orion prototype. Anyone watching smart glasses should care, since this material could decide how sharp, and how costly, future wearable displays become.
What actually happened
Meta first showed silicon carbide (SiC) diffractive waveguides in its Orion prototype at Meta Connect, September 2024, reaching a 70 degree field of view, according to KGOnTech (Karl Guttag). Meta detailed the material's case in a January 2025 SPIE paper. Chinese firms SEEV, Moldnano, LLVision, and Goeroptics were developing SiC before Orion and are moving toward production. Coherent has sold SiC substrates in the US since 2024. Magic Leap confirmed its own SiC work. SEEV co-founder Dr Shi Rui spoke on mass producing SiC waveguide chips on 29 October 2025. The Nimbo X1 Kickstarter, using a SEEV SiC waveguide, launched 28 August 2026. SiC's refractive index reaches about 2.6, versus 1.7 to 2.0 for glass, with thermal conductivity 200 to 400 times higher.
How we got here
Diffractive waveguides once needed three gratings. WaveOptics, acquired by Snap in 2021, built a simpler two-grating design, now called Meta's butterfly architecture. Even Realities already uses SEEV's glass two-grating waveguides in its G1 and G2 glasses, and Vuzix showed a similar setup at CES 2026. Moldnano and Westlake University published SiC research in eLight and at SPIE AR/VR/MR 2026. LLVision's paper appeared in Photonics in September 2025, backing claims that SiC can deliver full color with fewer rainbow artifacts in one layer.
Why this matters for you
This affects your wallet if you buy early AR hardware. SiC's higher refractive index allows thinner, wider field of view lenses, but small wafers and low yield keep costs high. Expect tradeoffs, like color unevenness and ghost images from higher reflectivity. Devices such as the Nimbo X1 may trade image consistency for a wider view. Builders in the bonuz ecosystem should track wafer costs, not just field of view numbers. Cheaper two-grating glass designs may reach smaller devices before SiC prices drop for everyday buyers.
The bigger question
Will AR makers wait for silicon carbide to mature, or shift to cheaper two-grating glass designs that trade field of view for lower cost and steadier images? The answer shapes whether smart glasses follow Meta's ambitious Orion path or Even Realities' smaller, more affordable route.
